July 5                     Commissary Ridge/Crest Trail

Saturday              Mt. Mitchell State Park

Come and admire the views from the highest point east of the Mississippi!  This ten-mile loop begins at the ranger station just inside the entrance to Mt. Mitchell State Park, follows the Commissary Trail (mostly level) for several miles, and continues up Big Tom, a very steep half-mile trail to the Crest Trail.  The Crest, which takes us over several peaks, is up and down with a few scrambles over rocks, but is not overly strenuous.  We make our way to the NEW (hopefully open) observation tower on top of Mt. Mitchell (elev. 6684’) and then take the Little Mt. Mitchell Trail down to the cars.  Call for meeting time and place.
